Compare the Free Tablets
The tablets comparison table below allows you to quickly compare the features of the free tablet PCs which you can get when you buy a contract phone in the UK.
Wi-Fi Only or WiFi + 3G?
One of the main choices you'll have to make is to choose whether you're only going to connect your to the internet via Wi-Fi (all tablets can do this), or whether you want to connect via 3G as well. This means you'll need to purchase a separate SIM card (contract or PAYG) which wil allow you to connect via any one of the UK mobile networks (O2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile or Three). The Wi-Fi only tablets are normally cheaper, so the deals which come with one of those for free will be more competitive. Also note that a lot of new phones can act as a Wi-Fi bridge to 3G networks these days, allowing you to still connect your tablet to the internet via your mobile phone if no other Wi-Fi connection is available. Please contact us if you like us to recommend some deals which offer a free tablet with a phone capable of acting as a Wi-Fi internet hub.
How much tablet space?
Another difference between the tablets within each brand will be the hard-drive space. If you're going to store pictures, music and videos on your tablet you're going to need one with more space. If you're mainly using it for internet browsing you won't need that much space.
Tablet Operating System?
The operating system (OS) of your free tablet will differ between the brands. Apple and BlackBerry use their own operating system, while the other tablets use the Android system (owned and maintained by Google). The OS will determine which applications (apps) you can download and run on your tablet. Lots of apps are for free though for the more sophisticated ones (or if you want to avoid adverts) you'll have to pay a small fee. The Apple iPads can run the apps available in Apple's app store. Android apps are found on the Android market and BlackBerry also has its own store for apps. It's fair to say that there're more Android and Apple apps than BlackBerry's at the moment. You'll probably also find more free apps on Android tablets, mainly because it's easier (and hence cheaper) for developers to get their apps onto the Android market. Obviously this is a matter of taste. If you have an Apple phone you're probably more likely to go for the iPad, same for BlackBerry phone users and the Playbook, while people with Android mobile phones tent to go for deals with free Android OS tablets.
